There are a few opensource operating systems, but i think linux is the one with most
suport and users, thats why i choose linux.
There is a lot of distrubution for linux, i choose gentoo afther try a lot others and i think this is the best.
Reasons
1 - A lot of suport and help ( foruns , how to ... )
This is important because many linux distribution are realy easy to install
(knoppix,unbunto, ... ) but when you want to install your hardware you sometimes dont
find information to set it up, or information to correct some weird bug.
2 - Package manager is one of the best (install and uninstall programs in a safe way, and its easy to add new programs to the list)
3 - All source code installs are compiled,this means smaller programs that run faster
4 - No blue screens ;) , i had never reboot my sistem because of failure.
5 - Its linux it have a lots of cool programs :), you can even make your own supercomputer if you have a lots of computers and gentoo :)
